Winecoff firefighter Raymond McGill was laid to rest February 8th in Atlanta's Westview Cemetery.

Raymond McGill began his Atlanta firefighting career in 1940 but was quickly called to service in World War II. It was upon his return to Atlanta that he faced his biggest challenge: the 1946 Winecoff Hotel fire. His distinguished action there attracted the attention of Chief C.C. Styron, who in May of 1947, promoted McGill to become Chief of Training. In 1962 he authored a training manual for young firefighters. He served the Atlanta Fire Department for thirty-four years. Raymond McGill - a hero of the Winecoff fire - was one hundred years old.
